Dog owners responsibilities

Dog Registration

  • All dogs over the age of 3 months must be registered.
  • Registration must be renewed each year on the 1st July. If you acquire a new dog please ensure the dog is registered and have this registration transferred into your name.
  • If the dog is not registered and it is past the due date, you may be liable for an infringement fee of $300 and your dog may be impounded.
  • If you re-home a dog, please ensure your local authority is advised of the change of ownership.
  • If you change your address, you must advise the local authority.
  • If your dog dies, please advise your local authority as you may be entitled to a refund.

For more information please refer to the notes on the back of the Dog registration Application Form.

If you have an unregistered dog and you are having difficulty paying the fees  please contact Animal Management as soon as possible and discuss possible arrangements to assist you in making this payment.

Micro-chipping

All dogs that are registered for the first time, unless they are working/ farm dogs, are required to be micro chipped.

If your dog is micro chipped by a veterinary surgeon or the SPCA, please ensure you supply the microchip details to your Local Authority. As the owner, you must supply this information to your Council.

Council staff are available to microchip registered dogs at a cost of $20 per dog.

You may call at any Council office to pay the micro chipping fee.  If you live in Turangi or Mangakino, make an appointment to have your dog micro chipped with the Animal Control officer.

In Taupo,  please call in to the Taupo Dog Pound, 131 Centennial Drive, Taupo between 11 am and 2 pm Tuesday to Saturday (except Public holidays ). Bring your receipt to confirm the fee has been paid and the officer present will microchip your dog. We accept EFTPOS only at the Pound.

Permit Requirements for extra dog(s)

Dog owners that are thinking of having more than one dog in a residential area of the district may need to apply to the Council for a permit. Refer to the Taupo District Council Control of Dogs Bylaw2004 (need to be able to click on it to take you through to Bylaw) section 13.

If your property is under 800 sqm you will need a permit approved to keep more than one dog and if your section is more than 800sqm but less than 2000sqm you will need a permit approved to keep more than two dogs.
When applying for a permit approval you will need:

  • One-off non refundable permit application fee of $50.00 (incl gst)
  • Boundary neighbours agreement

  • No recent history of complaints, e.g. dogs barking excessively, dogs roaming, smell from area that dogs are kept in
  • All dogs to be registered and any changes to dogs to be notified to the council at the time of change.

Doggy doos

If your dog fouls in a public place or on someone elses property, you are required to remove the faeces, ensuring the faeces are suitably wrapped to prevent fouling of any public litter bin or other public receptacle. Free pooper-scoopers  bags are available at all Council offices.  Dispensers for the bags are also located at many of the districts dog exercise areas. View the Dog Exercise Areas Map  to see where these are situated.

Owners that fail to compy with the Taupo District Council Control Dogs Bylaw 2004 may receive a $300 infringement.
