Sale of Food at an Event, or Market

As an event organiser you would need to coordinate a number of issues to ensure that your event runs smoothly.

The provision of food must also be considered and Council needs to monitor that events and markets are providing the sale of food appropriately. Ensuring that this happens is the responsibility of the event organiser and may, or may not, require a health registration. The following, provides guidance in respect to the sale of food at a Taupo event or market.

If you wish to operate a food stall, sausage sizzle, mobile shop at an event then the event organiser is your first contact.

Event Registration with the Council or not?

Not required

• Where  mobile shops carrying their own current Certificates of Registration with a Council, and/or
• Stalls set up to sell food are only for charitable or community fundraising for special occasions and do not operate more than 4 times per year.

Required

• Where commercial stalls are selling food that do not have their own mobile Certificate of Registration.

If registration is required then an application with Taupo District Council is made to provide an ‘umbrella’ registration for the event, this would cover a number of stalls or temporary food premises.

As part of the application the event organiser is responsible for obtaining and providing all relevant food safety information to ensure that stalls are selling safely and legally.
