The Lake Taupo District is a vibrant growing region with a diverse range of resources including forestry, agriculture, hydroelectric and geothermal energy, tourism, scenic and recreational attractions. Taupo, Turangi and Mangakino are the three main urban areas in the district. There are also many lakeside settlements around the shores of Lake Taupo. In addition to stunning scenery the district has well developed accommodation, transport, recreation, attraction activities.
As well as gaining international recognition as a trout fishing destination the region is developing a reputation as a top event destination with an all year programme of sporting events and festivals. The Lake Taupo region is of central location and close proximity to Tongariro National Park and the Whakapapa ski area. With an outstanding clean, green environment the Lake Taupo region is one of the country's largest visitor destinations, attracting 1,093,782 guest nights for the year ended December 2004.
