Any person exercising a dog must be able to control it as if it were on a leash. If you cannot stop or retrieve your dog with a call or whistle, then you may not exercise it off a leash.
Respect and Enjoy Council's Dog Exercise Areas
Do not allow your dog to attack or annoy other dogs and people.
Remember to remove your dog's droppings. The Council supplies free pooper scooper bags. For more information click

Bitches that are in season are not allowed in public places.
Dogs are not allowed on children's play areas.

Restrictions December 1 to March 31
Dogs are not permitted in the following areas of the district from December 1 to March 31, inclusive, between the hours of 9 am to 7 pm.
- Taupo - Lakefront Reserve - above the reserve is a walkway where dogs are permitted provided they are on a leash at all times.
- Taupo - Two Mile Bay - dogs are permitted on the walkway provided they are on a leash at all times.
- Reserve and Beach area.
- Taupo - Beach area from Mapou Rd to Kowhai Road - dogs are permitted on the walkway provided they are on a leash at all times.
- Wharewaka Reserve and Beach area - dogs are permitted on the walkway provided they are on a leash at all times. Dogs are not permitted on the children's play area.
- Esplanade Reserves at Hatepe.
- Esplanade Reserves at Kinloch.
- Lakeshore Recreation Reserve Kuratau - from Kuratau River mouth to the end of Motutaiko Street.
Dogs are not permitted at
- The beach area opposite Acacia Bay Lodge
- Turangi Town Centre's shopping mall
- Pukawa Esplanade Reserve
- AC Baths Taupo
- Turtle Pool Turangi
- Any Council sports playing fields, courts, and children's play equipment areas
All other Council recreation reserves, unless identified as an exercise area, require dogs to be on a leash.

Free Pooper Scooper
