Pound Locations

The Council dog pounds provide kenneling for roaming, stray or lost dogs as well as providing a secure area for dogs that have been seized for non compliance of regulations.

The Taupo dog  pound is open Monday to Friday from 12 noon until 2 pm, exclusive of Public Holidays. Mangakino dogs are held at the Taupo Pound.

The Turangi dog pound is open by appointment. Contact the Turangi Service Centre on 07 386 7017.

Impounding Fees

If a dog is impounded on more than one occasion in a 12 month period the owner may be issued with an Infringement Notice and a fee of either $200 or $300.

A dog may be impounded for a breach of the Dog Control Act 1996 or local bylaws with the main reason being the failure of the owner to control their dog.

• Cost to implant micro chip $15

Dogs must be registered, micro chipped and all fees paid before they are released from the pound. The only dogs that do not require micro chipping are registered dogs that have been impounded for the first time.

Sale of dog from the pound is $75 - this includes the cost of micro chipping the dog. The current registration fee must be paid as well before the dog leaves the pound.

 
Destruction Fee for Single dog $50 with an additional fee of $20 for extra dogs
