Liquor Ban

A bylaw for the control of liquor in Taupo's central business district came into force on the 17 November, 2004. Anyone drinking liquor in the banned area from 4 pm Thursday to 7 am Mondays could be arrested and charged.

The New Year Liquor Ban will operate from December 27 to January 4 and does include reserves at Kinloch and the Lakefront. 

Prohibitions

From time to time additional areas may be designated as a Specified Public Place within the boundaries of the Taupo District for particular time periods, related to specified events or time of the year. Where additional areas are so designated a minimum of 14 days public notice shall be given specifying the additional areas, and the period with the specification applies. Public notices shall also be affixed in or adjacent to the additional specified public place(s) at such times.

Public places include, but are not limited to streets, service lanes, lanes, footpaths, car parks and reserves.

Permanent Liquor Ban in Taupo

Permanent Liquor Control

The Liquor Control Bylaw applies to any place or part of a place under the control of the territorial authority which is open to or used by the public. This applies whether or not a charge for admission applies and for any road within the area detailed below in Taupo and Mangakino.

Taupo

The Southern Boundary

The whole of the Lake front from the Harbour Master’s office through to and including the Lake Terrace Kaimanawa Street and Rifle Range Road intersection

The Western Boundary

Along the Waikato River from the Harbour Master’s office to the Control Gates Bridge.

The Eastern Boundary

The whole of Kaimanawa Street from the intersection of Kaimanawa Street and Lake Terrace through to and including the intersection of Kaimanawa Street and Tamamutu Street and including the Kaimanawa Reserve

The Northern Boundary

  • The whole of Tamamutu Street from and including the intersection of Tamamutu Street and Kaimanawa Street through to and including the intersection of Tamamutu Street and Ruapehu Street
  • The whole of Ruapehu Street from and including the intersection of  Tamamutu Street and Ruapehu  Street through to and including the intersection of Ruapehu Street and Spa Road
  • The whole of Spa Road from and including the intersection of Spa Road and Ruapehu Street through to and including the intersection of Spa Road and Tongariro Street and along SH1 To the northern end of the Control Gates Bridge
  • The whole of Nukuhau Street from the Nukuhau Street and Spa Road intersection through to and including the Control Gates Bridge and the Walkway Reserve

Mangakino

The Permanent Liquor Ban applies at Mangakino's CBD and all public reserves.

New Year Liquor Ban

Taupo District

The New Year Liquor Ban area includes the areas that are outlined in the Permanent Liquor Ban area and also include the following areas.

  • The Lakefront between the Harbour Masters Office and 72 Lake Terrace
  • Lakefront Reserve, Whangamata Bay in Kinloch
  • Lakefront Reserve, Acacia Bay and Whangaroa Reserve
  • Lakefront Reserve Wharewaka Point and Two Three and Four Mile Bays Taupo
  • Lakefront Reserve, Five Mile Bay
  • Te Moenga Reserve
  • Nukuhau Boat Reserve and the Public Swimming Beach area accessed off Rauhoto Street

Turangi Tongariro

The New Year Liquor Ban area includes the areas that are outlined in the Permanent Liquor Ban area and also include the following areas.

  • Hatepe Village and All Reserves
  • Mission Bay Lakeshore Reserve
  • Town of Waitetoko from the intersection of SH1 and Rawhira Road, Okahuroa Street, Otaiatoa Street, Mua Street and Warewera Street
  • Mission Point Reserve, Esplanade Reserve, Waitetoko Road and Ani Maria Place, Te Rangiita
  • Tauranga-Taupo Reserve, Heuheu Parade
  • Motuoapa Village Lakeshore Reserve
  • Waiotaka Domain, Stump Bay, Frethey Drive, Waiotaka
  • Pukawa Village Urban Area, All Reserves from North of the 50kph restriction sign on Pukawa Road
  • Omori and all Reserves East of the 70km Restriction Sign on Omori Road, including Omori Heights, Kaimanawa Views, Piripekapeka, Omori Stream North, Omori North, Kuratua River Mouth Village
  • Whareroa Village and Kowhai Flats Reserves, Ngati Parekawa Drive, Whareroa
