Taupo District Council has completed a comprehensive parking study looking at options for parking in Taupo Town and is inviting the public to have their say.
The study has assessed a range of parking options in the Taupo CBD and is now available for the public to review and make submissions. The study is proposing that paid parking is introduced in the form of pay and display machines, with the revenue generated put towards financing additional car parks including a parking building at the existing Heu Heu street site between 2010 and 2016. Further down the track (2016 – 2026) a new travel centre will be constructed and another parking facility if required.

April 2005
A Taupo Town Centre Parking study has been adopted by Council's Taupo/Kaingaroa-Mangakino/Pouakani committee following consideration of public submissions. The study predicts that a further 500 long term car parks will be needed in the next decade and recommends the construction of a car park building on the existing Council owned Heu Heu Street car park and the introduction of paid parking in the town centre to cover the cost of car park maintenance and construction of new car parks. Council has resolved to undertake a feasibility study next year to determine how the recommendations could be implemented and managed. The feasibility study will further evaluate the suitability of the Heu Heu street site for a car parking building in comparison with other potential sites within the town centre.
