Whakamaru Recreation Reserve (Ski Club) Concept Plan

A draft plan has been developed as a result of requests from the Whakamaru Ski Club and was an action included in the Mangakino Whakamaru Reserve Management Plans. This concept is still in its development stage and covers:

  • Construction of small retaining wall.
  • Re-contouring and landscaping.
  • Location of public toilets.
  • Location of jetty.

Funding of $10,000 in 2006/2007 and $40,000 in 2007/2008 has been included in the LTCCP 2006-2016. However, there is no provision for funding of the jetty. There is $30,000 identified in the financial year 2005/2006 for the construction of public toilets at the reserve.

Mangakino Recreation Reserve Landscape Concept Plan

A draft concept plan that has been developed in order to give some guidance to both Taupo District Council and the community over the next ten years and includes the following objectives.

  • Development of a pathway for both walkers and cyclists along the shores of Lake Maraetai which would then link with Waipapa Road and form a loop track. The project is included in Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy which was adopted last year.
  • Development of a planting guide for the Mangakino Golf Course.
  • Provision for a link to the Waikato River Trail from Atiamuri to Arapuni.
  • Enhance and develop the existing small wetland area along the lakeshore.
  • Removal of unwanted vegetation such as broom, honey suckle etc.
  • Guidelines for planting of native species to enhance the whole lake margin.
  • To reduce the presence of cars .

Funding of $150,000 over a ten year period has been included in the LTCCP 2006-2016 for this project.  

Additional funding of $10,000 has also been provided received from Waikato Catchment Ecological Enhancement Trust.
