Lake Taupo Erosion and Flood Strategy

During 2008 a Strategy is being developed to guide future management of the flood and erosion hazards around Lake Taupo. The Lake Taupo Erosion and Flood Strategy will also set out funding arrangements, responsibilities, identify work programmes and confirm timeframes for implementation.

Two technical studies have been undertaken to help us better understand the flood and erosion issues.

Consultation April/May 2008

A discussion paper explaining the flooding and erosion risks around the lake and seeking your views on potential management options is available.

Your feedback will be used to help us develop a draft Lake Taupo Erosion and flood Strategy. You will have another chance to comment and make suggestions on erosion and flood management around the Lake before the draft Strategy is finalised.

Comments are needed by 9 May 2008.

The Discussion Paper

The first section provides background information based on the findings in two separate technical studies on flooding and erosion around the lakeshore.

To make it quicker to find and comment on the location where you may have a particular interest we have provided separate information sheets for the main lakeshore settlements with an overview of the key issues below.  Some areas may be affected by erosion and/or flooding. For each area we have asked some questions to get your ideas on how the hazards could be managed.
