Council has allocated $500,000 in the 2006/07 financial year for the initial development of a Riverside Park on the Tongariro Domain adjacent to the Waikato River on the site of the former Taupo Motor Camp. The work programme includes development of an ampitheatre for concerts, shows and prize givings, removal of old roads, installation of drainage irrigation, re-grassing of the area, a re-furbished small toilet block for reserve users and large toilet block for events, and construction of a parking area. The park is due to open to the public before Christmas with construction of a riverside path due to get underway in February 2007 after detailed designs are finalised.
