Changes to SH1/SH5 intersection

MEDIA RELEASE

07 October 2009

Right of way for State Highway 1 drivers at SH1/SH5 Wairakei intersection

Motorists are asked to take extreme care at this major intersection due to layout changes at the SH1/SH5 Wairakei intersection - with SH1 traffic heading south now having the right of way

The temporary layout has been put in place to minimise disruption while workers construct a roundabout which will replace the T junction once the ETA is open.

All southbound traffic on SH1 heading to Taupo will now have the right of way and are no longer required to give way to SH5 traffic.  Cars travelling to or from Rotorua on SH5 are now required to stop and give way to all traffic on SH1.

A temporary speed limit of 30kmph is in place and motorists are asked to follow all temporary traffic signage.

We ask all road users to exercise patience and consideration while these changes are in place to avoid driver frustration.
