Council tackling stormwater issues

MEDIA RELEASE

19 October 2009

Taupo District Council adopted a new stormwater strategy at a special Council meeting on Wednesday.

The purpose of the stormwater strategy is to assist Council in meeting its Long Term Council Community Plan [LTCCP] objectives of protecting and enhancing the environment and improving living and working environments in the urban areas of Taupo District.

“We have lifted our stormwater management requirements,” said Councillor Bernhard Chrustowski. “By reducing the degradation of overland stormwater flowpaths, and by reducing the amount of sediment and contaminants in stormwater, we can lessen the potential pollution of our lakes and waterways.”

Whilst Council has lifted the minimum standards, it has also provided enough flexibility to encourage innovative designs and new methods of stormwater management, thus providing for financially and environmentally sustainable stormwater solutions in future.

Deputy Mayor Christine McElwee said that the new stormwater strategy also aims to reduce any risks to public health and safety associated with stormwater management systems.

The strategy will be available to view at Council offices and on this website here.
