Free health and safety seminar at Taupo Events Centre
A group of health and safety professionals in the Rotorua / Taupo region have joined forces to try and improve understanding and performance of health and safety in our area.
John Skudder of ACC’s Injury Prevention team says, “we hear talk of a ‘Safety Culture’ and vague recommendations about how to achieve one, but what does it actually mean and how do we do it?”
He says “often someone acquires the health and safety role in addition to their normal duties or they may pick it up due to a personal experience or interest in the area. This seminar provides an opportunity for health and safety representatives with varying levels of experience and knowledge to get together and talk about their situations. It’s often these discussions that prove the most valuable.”
Mr Skudder says, “we want to challenge health and safety champions to take a broader view about how accidents and injuries might occur and come up with new strategies to try in their workplaces. We also want them to recognise that health and safety should be practiced 24/7, not just in the workplace.”
The free seminar will be held on Wednesday 17 June, from 8.30am – 11.30 am at the Taupo Events Centre. Spaces are limited so bookings are essential - this can be done by e-mail to safetyculture@acc.co.nz
Speakers include Wing Commander Nigel Sainsbury of the RNZAF talking about human factors in health and safety; Chris Polaczuk of ACC talking about preventing and managing discomfort, pain and injury; and Channa Perry the Programme Manager for New Plymouth Safe Community. [See attached flyer for more information on speakers.]
The seminars are the result of a joint venture between Taupo District Council, ACC, Lakes DHB, DoL, Rotorua District Council.
