Free holiday programme buzzing

MEDIA RELEASE

24 July 2009

There were record numbers attending Taupo Public Library’s July holiday programme.

742 people took advantage of twelve free events including dinosaurs, dolls, Harry Potter, the Blue Book Bus, Thomas the Tank Engine, and even a celebration of the anniversary of the first moon landing.  “Eddy the Taniwha, the children’s mascot, even learned how to ski,” said Children Librarian Kevin Collins.

One day’s activities included the staff of St John’s showing the children a day in the life of driving an ambulance.  “The children were able to see their heart beat on a monitor, it was wonderful” said Mr Collins.

At the centre of all the events was the 'World Seeker' competition run throughout the two weeks called the ‘Mystery of Hope Diamond’.  Children had a challenge on their hands deciphering codes, puzzles, following maps and creating crafts to aid them through a treasure hunt in the library.  “Not only did they uncover interesting facts about 11 countries, but also about themselves as they were assisted by Leonardo da Vinci, Florence Nightingale, Khufu’s mummy, even Anne Boleyn’s ghost,” said Mr Collins.

The competition was won by 6yr old Anzac Hurae.  Full results are on display in the library.  Mr Collins said “Rumours are true - there will be a World Seeker II competition held at the library in the September holidays featuring the Loch Ness Monster, it is not to be missed.”
