Lake Taupo region popular for conferences
MEDIA RELEASE

The Lake Taupo region has maintained its seven percent national market share in hosting corporate conferences despite the economic pinch.
Rotorua, Queenstown and Manawatu, which are popular and well-equipped conference destinations, also hold around seven percent shares compared with Auckland’s 37 percent share.
The region was represented last week at ‘Meetings’, a national conferences trade show, by Destination Lake Taupo, Taupo Venues and a group of local venue and accommodation providers. Together they showcased local facilities to event managers, conference organisers, corporate travel agents and associations.
“The buyers at ‘Meetings’ are there to find venues which suit their requirements and it’s our job to sell our region and update them on what we can offer in the way of facilities, activities, transport, restaurants and services,” says Destination Lake Taupo’s convention bureau manager, Di Christie.
“Even though numbers were down at this year’s show, there was a positive attitude amongst buyers and actual conference business was converted,” she says. “There may be a public perception that holding conferences at the moment is improvident, but conference and event organisers are still looking at future options.”
“The summer ahead is looking promising and our hope is that the importance of staff training and staff rewards will once again become a key part of company strategy. And, of course, Taupo will be their choice of destination!”
