New septage facility takes the hassle out of waste disposal
MEDIA RELEASE
26 February 2010
Taupo district Deputy Mayor Don Ormsby officially opened the new Ashwood Septage Facility on Friday last week, exclaiming it was his first ‘stink’ job to do as deputy mayor.
The new facility, located in Ashwood Industrial Park, caters for septage and waste contractors. The waste collected from domestic septic tanks and grease traps from restaurants will be unloaded at the facility. The waste then passes through a screening process before being piped down to the Taupo Waste Water Treatment Plant on Waikato St.
Special Projects Manager Mark Day says the new facility is completely unmanned. “The trucks just drive in, connect up a pipe, and empty their tanks. It’s quite state-of-the-art.”
The location of the facility combined with the planting of trees mean it will blend in with the surrounding area, and be quite unobtrusive. Any odour produced by the facility is also controlled by a special bio-filter, which uses wet tree bark to filter unpleasant smells. Mr Day says there will be virtually no odour from facility, and that bio-filters have been successfully used in residential areas in Taupo.
