Taupo District Council’s Roadside Attractions concluded on Friday 15 January with a great gig from cover band Triple J, featuring an impromptu vocal performance from local Paki Blake Anorangi.
The Roadside Attractions concerts have been on at lunchtimes in the Great Lake Centre courtyard and are part of Taupo’s More FM Summer Series schedule which features live music from local and national artists throughout December and January.
New Zealand cover band Triple J wrapped up the popular civic-centred shows on Friday and were joined onstage by some local talent after they challenged anyone in the crowd to sing with them. Local boy Paki Blake Anorangi jumped on stage and sang Michael Jackson’s ‘Beat It’, before again lending his vocal talent for Guns N Roses hit ‘Sweet Child of Mine’.
Event Organiser Warwick Hall says the crowd interaction was fabulous. “It’s great to see bands really involving the crowd; and you can’t get much more involved than that. These shows have been a real treat for locals and visitors over the busy summer season.”
Triple J also featured at the Unison Amphitheatre in Riverside Park on Sunday night as part of the Sunday Series concerts. Paki and his family were at the event and Paki was again invited up on stage for a repeat performance which was applauded by the large crowd. “I think we’ve got a star in the making here,” said Mr Hall.
The Summer Series’ free Sunday concerts will continue at Riverside Park every Sunday from 6-8pm until the end of January. “Bring a picnic dinner and your favourite bottle of vino, and we’ll see you there” says Mr Hall.
