Positive flow on effects of ETA

With development of the East Taupo Arterial route well underway and the Fulton Hogan project team established in Taupo, noticeable flow on effects are benefiting the local economy.

The $110million dollar contract has attracted a skilled workforce to the district whilst also providing work prospects for local businesses and employment opportunities for locals.  Fulton Hogan staff are integrating themselves into the Taupo community, shopping locally, enjoying local hospitality, renting and purchasing homes, joining local clubs and participating in local days.

“With the current recession that everyone is talking about, it is great to see a major infrastructure project such as the East Taupo Arterial moving ahead in Taupo and providing opportunities for businesses directly and indirectly,” said Mayor Rick Cooper.

The preparation work for the ETA is well underway with a majority of the vegetation clearing and fencing almost complete.  The construction team are currently installing culverts (drains that go under the road) in preparation for the major earthworks to start later this month.

ETA project overview

The 16km highway, which runs along the eastern outskirts of Taupo (from Wairakei to Taupo Airport) and includes a bridge over the Waikato River, is expected to be complete in March 2011.

The objective of the East Taupo Arterial is to reduce the number of heavy vehicles travelling through the Taupo CBD and along the lakefront and to reduce traffic congestion during holiday season and events.

The current total project cost is estimated at $110 million including construction, investigation design and land purchase.  The New Zealand Transport Agency has approved funding assistance of 76.5% and based on current project estimates, Taupo District Council’s cost will be approximately $25.8 million.  Council’s share will be funded by the sale of land it owns and from development contributions.
