Schools diving into the Great Lake exhibit
MEDIA RELEASE
17 September 2009
Taupo Museum is currently hosting an interactive, science-based exhibition focused on our Great Lake, and school classes from around the district are queuing up to visit the exhibit.
The ‘Great Lake – Nature and Power’ exhibition provides insights into the unique lake environment, its ecology, geology, hydrology and significant history, plus its role in present times. Already nine classes from schools in the area have taken advantage of having a science based exhibition available locally.
The exhibit looks at the scientific facts of the lake in a fun and interactive manner, making it appealing to children and adults alike. The interactive features include a digital microscope for investigating lake water life, an aquarium with live fish and koura, a computer connected to live earthquake monitoring equipment, and a power generation rowing challenge where visitors can see their own energy light up the towns of New Zealand.
Museum teacher Chris Potter has prepared hands on programmes to help students make the link between scientific knowledge and everyday decisions and actions.
Hilltop School teacher Janet Martin said the kids really enjoyed the exhibit, “The extra effort that the museum staff went to really made it interactive and fun for the kids, they learnt a lot about the lake which is great.”
The exhibit is proudly sponsored by Mighty River Power and Environment Waikato and finishes 28 October 2009. Entry is free for Taupo district residents.
