Student cycle skills put to the test

MEDIA RELEASE

20 November 2009

Students from schools around the region took part in this year’s first inter-regional school cycle skills contest in Taupo.

The event was held at the Crown Park Cycle Facility, and is the first time Taupo has hosted the competition.  The students from National Park, Taupo, Tokoroa and Broadlands Schools completed a theory test, helmet fitting, practical skills and an obstacle test.

Police Education officers and Council Road Safety Coordinators from around the region organised the competition, designed to encourage cycle safety amongst school aged children.  Taupo Mayor Rick Cooper and Area Commander Steve Bullock of Taupo Police presented the champions with their medals.

National Park School student Logan Lawrence took out top honours, winning both first place boy, and the school trophy for overall top marks.  The first place girl was Lisa Hutt of Broadlands School.

Mayor Cooper is himself training for the upcoming Cycle Challenge event, and had nothing but praise for the students.  “I think cycling is the transport of the future, it keeps you fit, is environmentally friendly, and cheap.  I’m really excited to see our future generations getting involved and learning valuable skills to keep them safe.”  The Mayor was sad to see that bike sheds were no longer commonplace.  “Bike sheds were an important part of school in my day, I’d love to see them return.”

Taupo is the cycling hub of New Zealand and all tribute goes to these students who have picked up life-long cycle skills.

“It’s so important to gain cycle skills from an early age to give us confidence as a cyclist on busy roads” says Taupo District Road Safety Co-ordinator, Christine Hutchison.
