Watch out, kids are back at school
MEDIA RELEASE
22 January 2010
Motorists around the country will notice the return of school children using roads and footpaths as school begins this week, and the Taupo District Council are urging motorists to use caution, especially those approaching schools.
Council will be deploying speed trailers outside schools during the first two weeks of term one, making sure drivers are aware of their speed in these built up areas. A radio campaign will also be pushing these messages, particularly around busy school traffic times.
Road Safety Coordinator Christine Hutchison says those carrying children to and from school also need to check their driving habits. “We’re encouraging parents and caregivers to choose safety over convenience when dropping their kids off to school, what is convenient for you can be dangerous for your child or other children.”
Ms Hutchison joined parking wardens last year to observe the behaviour of school traffic, and will continue to do so this year. “We noticed some vehicles stopping on ‘NO STOPPING’ lines to collect their children. These markings are there to ensure children can see and be seen and need to be kept clear at all times.
“It is important to obey all school parking restrictions and may mean being prepared to walk further than usual,” says Ms Hutchison.
Parents are also reminded that it is a good idea to walk children to the school gate, helping reduce congestion and danger, and to always set a good example with your children when crossing the road. If children are getting out of the car, have them use the footpath side of the car, keeping them away from traffic. Take extreme care when pulling into driveways close to schools, and drive slowly and with patience on wet days.
