Taupo enjoys friendly relations with Noumea in New Caledonia, Suzhou in China and Hakone in Japan.
In the lower reaches of China's Yangtze and on the shores of Lake Taihu lies the 2500-year-old city of Suzhou. The relationship between Taupo and Suzhou has been developing over the past five years in the form of exchange trips and the sharing of knowledge and skills. More information here

Hakone is part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park, less than 100 kilometers from Tokyo, Japan. The relationship between Taupo and Hakone established 20 years ago and is due to their shared similarities of geothermal activity, a lake, trees, and mountains. Both Taupo and Hakone, therefore, share their respective popularity as tourist attractions. More information here
Turangi Tongariro and Kitashiobara
The two sister cities have a friendship pledge that fosters mutual exchange, first through culture and understanding in every field and secondly towards peace and prosperity of the world. The pledge says that both authorities:
- Promote understanding between their respective communities specifically between the people of Japan and New Zealand.
- Consult on a regular basis to establish the best methods of promoting sufficient action to ensure an enduring and viable sister city relationship.
- Specific exchanges, activities and other actions will be from time to time or as agreed between the two parties.
