Local body elections are held throughout New Zealand every three years. The next elections for Taupō District Council will be held on October 12, 2019.
The Taupō District Council election will be for the mayor and 11 councillors, including one from the newly established Taupō East Rural ward, seven from the Taupō ward and two from Turangi/Tongariro. No election is required for the Mangakino-Pouakani Ward as one nomination was received for the one vacancy.
There will also be an election for the Turangi/Tongariro Community Board which will include two members from the Tongariro subdivision. No election is required for the Turangi town subdivision as four nominations were received for the four vacancies.

The voter return in the Taupō District was 52.27%, being 12,967 votes, excluding special votes.
