Butterfly spreads its wings at domain
18 December 2014
The butterfly sculpture designed by a high school student has been brought to life on Tongariro Domain.
Taupo-nui-a-Tia College student Tessa Ralfe created the model of the monarch butterfly sculpture for a high school project and entered it in a design competition run by Taupo Sculpture Trust.
The sculpture, Butterfly, was unveiled at the domain on Tuesday with about 30 people attending, including Tessa, members of the trust, council staff and friends and family of those involved.
Taupo District Council agreed to the construction of the sculpture at its September council meeting. The three metre high sculpture was built by Lake Steel and stands at the entrance to some flower gardens opposite Tūwharetoa Street.
The sculpture trust selected Butterfly for construction because of its simplicity, beauty and reasonable cost to produce.
