Fire danger warning for Taupo District
19 January 2015
A total fire ban has been put in place across rural areas of the Taupo District following an extended period of hot, dry weather.
Fire risk in the district is now extreme prompting warnings for people to remain vigilant.
Principal rural fire officer Phil Parker said an extended period of rain would be needed before the lifting of the ban was even considered.
The ban meant permits for open fires in rural areas would not be issued under any circumstance and it was vital any suspicious smoke was immediately reported to emergency services by calling 111, he said.
Mr Parker encouraged the community to exercise extreme caution when dealing with fire or potential ignition sources. Even something as simple as a smouldering cigarette butt can put our district at risk, he said.
