IRONMAN 70.3 move welcomed
12 December 2014
News IRONMAN Asia Pacific is to consolidate its New Zealand IRONMAN events in Taupo has been warmly welcomed by Mayor David Trewavas.
IRONMAN announced today that the Taupo Half triathlon will be rebranded as IRONMAN 70.3 Taupo next year. At the same time it announced the 70.3 event it holds in Auckland in January will be the last in that location, making the Taupo event the only Ironman 70.3 in New Zealand from December 2015.
Mr Trewavas said the Taupo District has a strong, long-standing relationship with IRONMAN and a solid reputation when it came to hosting events.
Our geographical location combined with some stunning scenery as the backdrop for these endurance events, make us the perfect choice, he said. It is a great partnership, with IRONMAN operating outstanding events, being named as New Zealand's best hosted major event this year.
We are now truly the home of IRONMAN New Zealand we look forward to continuing our strong partnership.
Mr Trewavas paid tribute to Taupo Half triathlon organisers Wayne and Vicki Reardon who he said had worked tirelessly to make the event a success.
Wayne and Vicki have been involved with the Taupo Half since its inception and have worked hard to grow it to its current form. I thank them for their contribution. They have done the district proud.
The inaugural IRONMAN 70.3 Taupo event, to be held next December, will be the only New Zealand event carrying qualifying slots for the IRONMAN 70.3 world championships to be staged in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast in September 2016.
