Kids creating outside the square
8 January 2015
Children will be both entertained and challenged at Taupo Museum with creative activities themed on a popular computer game.
Minecraft is the latest craze in children's computer gaming and involves breaking and placing blocks. Exhibitions officer Kerence Stephen said the concept lends itself to many different artistic techniques.
The art classes and activities were designed to encourage children aged between eight and 12 to create artworks in the real world. The idea is to take children from a two-dimensional computer screen into a three-dimensional world using their hands to create tangible artworks rather than just using a computer controller, Ms Stephen said. I know I'm far from the only parent who has trouble coaxing my young Minecraft addict away from the screen and I hope that by providing activities with the Minecraft theme we can help get kids actively involved in art experiences.
Local artists Mikaere Gardiner, Sally-Ann Davies and Michelle Edlin have familiarised themselves with Minecraft and will be taking the classes. They will be tutoring the children in pointillism, cubism and print-making.
Classes will be held on January 22, 23, 26 and 27 between 11am to 1pm in the Niven room at the museum. Bookings are essential and must be made at Taupō Museum. The cost is $5 per child per class which must be paid to book a spot and children may be booked in to a maximum of two classes each to allow many children to participate.
The Niven room will also be open at all other times from January 22-27 for all children to come in and get creative free of charge.
