Sewer system to be repaired in Turangi
22 January 2015
A number of trees will be removed from alongside the Tongariro School field in Turangi from today to allow the replacement of a collapsed sewer main.
Taupo District Council infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said while removing trees was not the preferred option, in this case it was the only way to access the damaged infrastructure that was causing sewage spillages.
The sewer main and adjoining sewer line needed to be replaced to prevent problems in the future. After extensive investigation into what was happening down these lines we have discovered several components in need of repair or replacement, he said.
Both the tree roots and ageing of pipe work have contributed to the deterioration of the sewerage system, along with the build-up of fat, rocks and debris. To access the sewer main, a mix of cyprus, macrocarpa, European beech and ash trees that run alongside Te Rangitautahanga Road need to be felled.
Council contractors Fulton Hogan will be carrying out the work to replace with main, with council arborists felling the trees at Tongariro School.
Work is expected to take about two weeks. Contractors aim to have it finished before school returns in February.
Further work is scheduled to be carried out in other areas of Turangi to repair about 500 metres of sewer pipe in late February or early March.
