Speed limit to change on section of Poihipi Road
10 December 2014
The speed limit on an 800 metre section of Poihipi Road is to change from 100 kilometres per hour to 80 in a bid to improve road safety.
Taupo District Council this week agreed to approve the reduction following a request from residents in the area for the speed limit to be changed.
In a report to the council, infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said the 800 metre section of the road from Wairakei Drive/State Highway 1, continued to be dangerous. There had been 10 crashes since 2009, with speed being a significant cause.
Traffic volumes in this area are particularly heavy and it is also used as a main training route for cyclists that have risk factors that do not affect car drivers, he said. It was also a strategic route for heavy vehicles.
We have undertaken a review and those findings deem it appropriate for the change to be made.
New 80 kilometre per hour signage will be installed as soon as possible with the new speed limit coming into force once the signs are erected.
