Waitahanui’s new water supply is officially online and residents can now connect to the scheme.
The $4 million project began in November 2017 and attracted a $1.9 million subsidy from the Ministry of Health. The total project cost was $1 million more than originally expected following the receipt of tenders, and extra funding was approved by council to ensure Waitahanui residents gained access to a secure, quality drinking water supply.
Infrastructure manager Denis Lewis said joining the scheme was not compulsory, but nearly 60 per cent of residents had signed up so far.
“Residents can still connect to the new scheme for no charge, so if you haven’t already opted to connect to and would like to know more about the new scheme, get in touch with us.”
The new scheme involved the laying of 8km of water pipes and the construction of 500m³ storage reservoir with pump station and emergency generator.
Anyone wanting more information on how to connect can contact water and wastewater asset manager Mike Cordell at mcordell@taupo.govt.nz or by phoning 07 376 0724.
