Wastewater flow stopped from entering lake
Contractors are using pumps to manage the flow of wastewater at the site of a major pipe break this afternoon and stopped the flow into the lake.
Chief executive Gareth Green said more pumps were being brought in to help manage the flows over peak times.
“We have a team onsite closely monitoring the situation and this will continue overnight,” he said. “We are also using storage in our largest pump station to further manage the flows.”
Mr Green said the quality of drinking water in Taupō was not affected by the wastewater overflow. “However, we still need people to conserve water and minimise the impact on wastewater flows by not flushing toilets unless absolutely necessary, and not taking baths and doing laundry tonight,” he said.
Detours would remain in place for traffic on Lake Terrace until further notice. Permanent repairs would take a number of weeks, rather than days, Mr Green said.
Another update will be provided in the morning.
