Repairs
to the Lake Terrace water and wastewater pipes that were washed out on Tuesday
are underway.
Chief executive Gareth Green said council staff and contractors had again worked overnight to stabilise the site during heavy rains and are now starting work on a long-term fix that will include remedial work to the cliff face and new water and sewer mains.
“Our staff and contractors have been doing a great job under really difficult conditions, and it was great to see that the community responded to calls to reduce water use as we had a good reduction in inflows. We need people to keep up the good work though at this stage. This is going to be a big job, with some major works going on at the Lake Terrace site in the coming days as we cut trenches for the new pipes, and we are also finalising plans for clean-up operations on the lake shore with Waikato Regional Council and Tūwharetoa Trust Board,” he said.
Mr Green said water monitoring was ongoing and council was working closely with Waikato Regional Council and Toi Te Ora Public Health on this. “We’re going to be taking a very conservative approach around our water monitoring and will be bearing this in mind throughout the clean-up process.”
