Staff from Taupō District Council have been out in force today, picking up litter as part of Keep New Zealand Beautiful Clean Up Week.
Last year over 40,000 everyday kiwis got involved across the country, helping to clean up their backyard. Chief executive Gareth Green said council had a responsibility to lead by example here in Taupō.
“This is New Zealand Clean Up Week and I’m keen to continue the ‘war on litter’ that we started here a few years ago.
“We all have a duty to get out there and ensure we’re looking after the Taupō District and contributing to the place we love,” he said.
Any organisation can get involved with litter pick-ups across Taupō, with council supplying all the materials and handling the disposal of litter. They can contact Environmental Ranger Shannon Hanson on shanson@taupo.govt.nz.
Further community events are on this weekend with a litter pick-up and pancake breakfast on the Taupō lakefront on Saturday 14 (meet at the Hole-in-One carpark at 8.30am) and at Te Kapua Park in Turangi on Sunday 15 (meet outside Turtle Pools at 10am).
