New market operator Karen Cederwall is excited to create a family-friendly Sunday market at Northcroft Domain.
The mum of two, who has a background in retail and management, will launch the new market on Sunday January 5 2020.
“When I saw that the council were seeking expressions of interest from people interested in running a market, I jumped at the idea,” she said.
“It is a fantastic spot, directly across from our beautiful lake, and I’m really looking forward to what this location will offer.”
After undertaking market research, Cederwall decided on a Sunday market from 9am – 1pm as it would allow more families to come along with their children.
“Saturdays are often so full on for families with children doing sports and, having discussed with many in the community, I decided Sunday was a better opportunity to ensure everyone can come down and enjoy our market.
“I want this to be a market that the community really feels ownership of and wants to come down and enjoy every weekend,” she said.
With the current lease on the Riverside Park site expiring on December 31, Cederwall was chosen following an expressions of interest period.
All applicants were considered alongside a number of criteria with Northcroft Domain the preferred site for all five operators who lodged an expression of interest.
The criteria included:
- Experience and / or capability in delivering a successful market and managing public activities
- Relevant operational details including days and hours of operation; management of stall-holders; types of activities, goods and services to be offered at the market; management of visitors
- A commitment to cooperative and professional relationships with council
- Providing Taupō specific value and adding to the Taupō community and experience
- Offering a unique experience or adding value over and above a “typical” market; including potential future enhancements or developments which may not be achievable immediately
- Plans for potential growth, development or evolution of the market over time
Cederwall said she is excited for the market’s future on the new site.
“We’re planning some exciting things for the Domain, including the option of a twilight market. We’re also looking at community-based projects including regular classes for art, cooking and yoga.
“At the moment though, I’m focused on gearing up for January. We’re looking for growers, producers, bakers, arts and craftswomen/men, foodies, collectors who would like to sell and showcase what they are passionate about.
“If you want to be involved in a positive community project please get in touch – I’d love to hear from you!”
