Council building scope change cuts cost by at least $5 million
Taupō District Council yesterday revisited its plan to build two levels of underground parking when it develops its new administration building, and instead will seek options for just one level of parking.
The decision is expected to shave at least $5 million from the projected cost due to removing some of the complexity of the design.
In June, the council confirmed its preferred option to build its new administration building at 61-67 Tuwharetoa Street, including two levels of underground parking and floor space for alternate uses including a café and bus facilities, after receiving more than 600 written submissions during the consultation process with the community.
Mayor David Trewavas said the newly-elected council had revisited the original decision following feedback from the community about the estimated cost. During a detailed workshop last week, the council had systematically reconsidered all the options it had consulted with the community on as part of its Long-term Plan amendment, and 61-67 Tuwharetoa Street was still the preferred site.
The designers would be asked to present options for the one level of parking to house the council’s fleet vehicles, and alternative solutions were also being pursued to create more car parking for the public within the town centre, said Mr Trewavas.
In addition, the design scope would allow the council to consider individual components of the building, including the inclusion of bus facilities and a café, so decisions could be made on cost and compatibility, he said.
