Mayor David Trewavas is reminding people to support Taupō District businesses by shopping locally.
Mr Trewavas said that while precautions being taken around COVID-19 were essential, there could be considerable economic impacts on the district.
“Visitors are a key part of our economy here in Taupō and we understand that many of our businesses will be affected, so now is the time to give them support.
“Of course, the government’s announcement of a $12.1 billion financial support package will help many of our local businesses affected by COVID-19, but each and every one of us can also play a part in keeping our district vibrant.
“We can do that by continuing to shop locally and getting out and experiencing our own backyard, where possible.
“Given the situation with COVID-19, it is tempting to shop online, but we have to remember that as long as you use common sense, we can continue to shop around the district. Our businesses keep locals in jobs, so let’s give them the support they need.
“We are currently creating a ‘support local’ campaign to encourage our community to help our local business owners, and we’ll be discussing further ways we can support our businesses in the coming weeks.
“Of course, at the same time, the message is still very simple – if you are unwell, please stay at home and follow the Ministry of Health guidelines which can be found at covid19.govt.nz.
“This is a rapidly changing situation and we encourage any businesses concerned to get in touch with Enterprise Great Lake Taupō who will be able to provide support and advice,” he said.
Enterprise Great Lake Taupō also has a portal for business support that can be accessed at www.taupo.biz/planning
