Huka Falls Road path complete
Work on the second stage of the footpath to Huka Falls carpark has been completed in time for the peak visitor season.
Work started in May this year and the finished path creates an improved, pedestrian-friendly connection between Taupō town centre and Huka Falls.
The first stage, completed in early 2018, saw a new 1.5m wide concrete footpath built on Huka Falls Road starting about 200m north east of Clearwater Lane and running 1.4km along the road, past Hipapatua Recreation Reserve. The second and final stage has extended the path to Huka Falls carpark.
Head of operations and infrastructure Kevin Strongman said it provided safe access for both locals and tourists.
“With stunning views of the river to be seen along the way to one of New Zealand’s most visited natural attractions, this infrastructure is a great addition to the area,” he said.
Taupō Ward Councillor Kevin Taylor said it was going to be very popular with visitors and locals alike.
“This is a wonderful asset connecting our town centre to one of the country’s most iconic visitor attractions.”
The path was originally due to be completed in September. Due to some unfavourable weather through winter and spring and being unable to pour concrete in the rain, the project was delayed by three months.
The path was fully funded by Waka Kotahi – New Zealand Transport Agency.
