Have your say on tourism in the Taupō District
MEDIA RELEASE: Destination Great Lake Taupō
Thursday 11 March 2021
Our region is a unique place in Aotearoa. We have some of the most incredible attributes in our landscape, our people, and in our stories. Attracting visitors, investment and talent is key to our region’s future success.
Prior to COVID-19, tourism contributed more than $600 million each year to our economy, generated more than one third of all jobs in the region and was outperforming many other sectors in the district.
As one of the region's most important sectors, tourism is earmarked as a priority for our district’s future economic success; a sector able to support and enrich the lifestyles of the current and future generations of people who choose to make this part of Aotearoa their home.
COVID-19 has given us an opportunity to reflect on how and what we want our destination to look like in the future.
Moving forward it is important to us all that tourism in the Taupō region is balanced, well managed and importantly, does not come at a cost to our environment or to our quality of life.
"We’re in the early stages of shaping a long-term plan for the future of tourism in the Taupō District and it’s
vital that we hear from the community about how they want tourism to progress here", commented Jane Wilson, General Manager of Destination Great Lake Taupō.
"Yes, it’s important that visitors have an amazing experience here, but more than that, we want to ensure that current and future residents are able to enjoy the benefits of a vibrant visitor economy, that enriches their lifestyle and makes them proud to call this part of New Zealand ‘home’" she added.
