Turangi Street Revitalisation Project making good progress
The Turangi Street Revitalisation Project is progressing well, despite some uncooperative weather, and the Turangi Tongariro Community Board have approved an additional package of work to be added to the project.
Board Chair Clint Green says the $6.5 million project, funded by the government under the Crown Infrastructure Programme, aims to improve streetscapes in Turangi township by repairing footpaths, kerbing and channelling that has been damaged by tree roots.
The damage causes water pooling, is dangerous for pedestrians and those using mobility scooters, and Mr Green said there are also concerns root intrusion will further impact infrastructure like water and wastewater pipes.
“The first package of work being carried out in Rangipoia Place, Tureiti Place, Mihipeka Grove, Paehoro Grove, Harata Street and Hingaia Street has been very well received by residents,” Mr Green said. “We’d like to thank everyone for their patience while this has been going on, as well as our contractors who have done some great work, rain or shine.”
“A temporary road seal has been used until a full permanent seal can be put in place when the weather is warmer, and the finished results are going to look great. This will make a huge improvement to the streets, and the funding for this project has been very timely as the kerbing and channelling in these streets is in real need of repair - so it’s fantastic to be able to get underway on the second package of work.”
The second package of work will see kerbing and channelling renewed in Hera Grove, Rea Grove, Marotoa Grove, Te Rewha Street, Mawake Place, Maria Place, and Te Iwiheke Place, with work on Maweke Place scheduled to get underway in the school holidays so as to reduce impact on Te Kura O Hirangi.
In order to reinstate the kerbing and channelling 111 trees will be removed in this package of work and Turangi residents are being invited to offer feedback on the types of threes they would like to see replanted by either visiting our survey here or visiting the Turangi i-SITE and Customer Services Centre.
