Council pays tribute to former District Mayor David Trewavas
It is with great sadness that Taupō District Council acknowledges the passing of former Taupō District Mayor David Trewavas, whose dedicated service to the district spanned 24 years.
Mr Trewavas served on Taupō District Council for six terms, two as a councillor and four as Mayor, from 2013 to 2025.
Taupō District Mayor John Funnell says throughout his mayoralty Mr Trewavas was a people person, always friendly and approachable and with a genuine interest in other people and their issues.
“I know from experience, being Mayor is never an easy job but David served the district with professionalism, dedication and a commitment to helping others; and for that he was hugely loved. He was widely respected, both within the district but also in local government throughout New Zealand and nationally, for his kindness, integrity and the effort he put into building relationships – he was known for remembering the name of everyone he met.
“David was an enthusiastic and positive advocate for the Taupō District. He never missed an opportunity to promote the district, whether it was on local radio, or on BBC International.”
Council chief executive Julie Gardyne worked with Mr Trewavas for four years and says his self-deprecating humour, outgoing personality and genuine liking for people were a real asset to him in his role as Mayor.
“He had a great way of breaking the ice with others. He built connections everywhere he went which have stood the council in good stead as it looks for positive outcomes for the district and its people.”
Mr Trewavas’ influence extended beyond Taupō and New Zealand as he worked with Taupō District’s sister cities and international partners. He advocated tirelessly for the district and its interests, to attract visitors and economic development.
Mr Funnell says, on behalf of the Taupō District, he extends sincere condolences to David’s wife Anna, his daughters, and his former council and business colleagues.
“David’s service leaves a lasting legacy, and our community is stronger because of his contribution. He will be remembered with gratitude, love and respect."
