It is our practice to inform all applicants of the outcome of their application. If you are unsuccessful in being short-listed for interview, you will notified by email. If you are successful, we will be in contact to arrange an interview.
An interview is an opportunity for you to present your skills, experience and personal qualities relevant to the position you are applying for.
Applicants short-listed for interview can expect a structured interview which means that each candidate interviewed will be assessed on the same criteria. You will usually be asked two types of questions:
- Behavioural: how you would have dealt with certain situations in the past; and
- Situational: how you would deal with a particular situation or a part of the job.
The interview typically takes between 30 – 60 minutes. The interview panel usually consists of two or three staff members including the supervisor and/or manager of the vacant position and a representative from the Human Resources department.
It is general practice to conduct one interview round only, however, on occasions it may be necessary for additional interviews to be undertaken or for other selection techniques, for example completing psychometric questionnaires, role-fit analysis and/or reference checking to be utilised.
If you are short-listed for interview and require any special assistance, for example disability access or a support person present at interview, please let the Human Resources department know as soon as possible to ensure your needs are met.
- Be straightforward and honest;
- Listen to the questions carefully and ask for clarification where needed;
- Present information / documentation to support your case;
- Provide specific or concrete examples which demonstrate your ability to satisfy each key result area;
- Prepare: read up on the information included in the Job Description and Job Advertisement, go to our website to find out about what is happening in the District at the moment or to obtain specific information if relevant i.e. strategy documents or district plans, Long Term Plans, Annual Reports; or contact the Human Resources Department who will be happy to answer your queries.
- Prepare questions to ask us: remember this is your chance to find out more about the Taupo District Council, the team and the job. Ultimately, this additional information will assist you in deciding whether the role and the organisation are for you!
- Do not answer questions with a simple “Yes” or “No”; explain or give examples wherever possible.
As part of the interview process, reference checks will only be carried out on the interviewee(s) whom the interview panel determines most closely match the selection criteria.
Other Pre-Employment Checks
Short-listed applicants may also be required to undergo one or more pre-employment checks or provide evidence of documentation to support claims. Such checks may include drug testing, qualifications check, police check, credit check or medical check.
Notification of Outcome
We will normally advise interviewed applicants of our decision over the phone. We aim to inform candidates within seven working days of the interview taking place.
