Alcohol Ban Areas


​​​​​​​​​​​​​Alcohol Control Bylaw

​The new Alcohol Control Bylaw 2018 came into force on Decemb​er 7 2018 to reduce crime and disorder related to alcohol consumption.  The Bylaw prohibits the consumption and possession of alcohol in specified restricted public places, as outlined​ in the sections below.​

Weekend alcohol ban

A permanent alcohol ban applies to the Taupo town centre between 4pm Thursday and 7 am Monday, and the Mang​akino town centre between 7pm Friday and 7am Sunday. These bans also apply to public holidays, as defined in the Holidays Act 2003.

Otumuheke Stream alcohol ban​

A permanent alcohol ban is in place at Otumuheke Stream bathing area in Spa Park which applies 24 hours a day, every day.

New Year alcohol ban

Over the New Year period from 12 noon December 27 until 7am January 4 there is an alcohol ban which covers Taupo and Turangi Town Centres, all lakefront​ reserve areas and Hipapatua Reserve (Reid's Farm).

​Alcohol in vehic​les

Alcohol cannot be consumed in vehicles in the specified alcohol ban areas.  Except at Hipapatua Reserve (Reid's Farm) where all vehicles are covered by the ban, in other areas alcohol can be consumed in lawfully parked certified self-contained vehicles (as define​d by NZS 5465:2001).​

Tempor​​​ary alcohol bans

From time to time the Council may resolve to include additional areas as an alcohol prohibition area for a particular time period relating to a specified event or a particular time of the year.
