As we celebrate the Taupo District's 10th anniversary with sister city Suzhou in China, we welcome this outstanding exhibition to our museum.  

​​This world-class exhibition features treasures from the Tang and Song Dynasties, including pieces dating back to 618AD. Visitors will get a glimpse into a fascinating world of ancient China that is over 1000 years old.

This is the exhibition’s first visit to New Zealand, and the first of its kind in the Taupo District. Exhibits include priceless Buddhist and Taoist artefacts, including celadon pottery and figurines from tombs. 

Taupo Museum is privileged to host this exhibition of national significance, and looks forward to sharing these ancient treasures with you.

Dates: August 31 to November 11. Open daily 10am to 4.30pm.  
Cost: Free for local residents and ratepayers. Visting adults $5, Seniors and tertiary students $3. Children are free.

Activities and events

Chinese Cooking cla​sses

Cuisine is an integral part of the Chinese culture. The early immigrant Chinese from various regions of China brought with them the unique flavours and techniques of food preparation. In conjunction with Suzhou – Faith and Life, Coriander Lime Kitchen is pleased to offer two months of Chinese Cuisine classes. 

We will be teaching you how to stir-fry, braise and steam with a focus on 色香味 which means "Colour, Fragrance, Taste". 

Venue:  Taupō Intermediate School, Kotare Street, Hilltop
Dates:  September to November 
Time:  10am–12.30pm or 5.30pm–8.30pm
Cost:  $55 per person.

Chinese Massage

Shufei Chinese Massage offers traditional treatments for aches, pains, injury, stress, and tension. Massage aids with blood circulation and energy. Chinese Moon Festival Tea and Tasting Ses​sio​ns

No.1 China Restaurant is excited to welcome you to celebrate the Chinese Moon Festival at their tea and tasting sessions. You will be treated to a traditional tea ceremony before moving through to the tasting area, where your taste buds will delight in a variety of Chinese treats. 

What better way to learn about Chines​e culture than through the sharing of tea and food with family and friends. A fantastic outing for all.

Dates:  Saturday, October 20. Three sessions: 11am-12pm; 12.30pm-1.30pm; 2pm-3pm

​Chinese Language and Culture Classes

Take this opportunity to learn about Chinese culture and language in a fun and friendly environment. This easy conversational language course is a unique opportunity to learn a few handy phrases and nail that pronunciation; invaluable for those working in business, retail and tourism, but also ideal for anyone interested in learning more about Chinese language and culture. 

A brilliant learning opportunity at a fraction of the normal cost.

Venue:  No.1 China Restaurant / Taupō Library
Daytime option: Tuesdays, September 4 to October 23. 10.30am–12.30pm (eight-week course)
Evening option: Wednesdays, September 5 to October 24. 6.30pm–8.30pm (eight-week course)
Cost:  $50 for the full eight-week course.

Tai C​hi

Taupō’s Taoist Tai Chi society is offering the chance to sample one of China’s oldest forms of exercise. Tai Chi was originally created as a fighting art, but is now used to help improve health. The turning and stretching movements increase circulation, flexibility, and strength. 

Over time they help reduce anxiety and restore calmness and peace of mind. Beginner Tai Chi classes will be offered on Thursday mornings at the museum as part of Suzhou – Faith and Life.

Venue:  Taupō Museum Ora Garden 10.30am-11am
Dates:  Thursday, September 6; Thursday, September 20; Thursday, October 25; Thursday, November 8.
Cost:  Gold coin donation + museum entry fee (if applicable)

Dumpling Demonstr​ations

Symbolising love, luck and happiness; dumplings have been a key feature in Chinese festivals and banquets for over a thousand years. Traditionally, couples worked together to create these popular savoury delights; the women tending to the meat fillings and the men to the pancake wraps.

Visit the Taupō Museum to join a visiting chef from No. 1 Chinese Restaurant for cooking tips and dumpling tastings. A great activity to add to your Saturday morning stroll around the Taupō market!
