If there’s one thing that can take the shine off the beautiful place we live in, it’s litter. Our team takes great pride in looking after the place we love but there is not enough time in the day for our staff to keep on top of litter.
Help us keep the Taupō District beautiful by putting rubbish where it belongs. By working together, we can make a difference.
Rubbish dumping and littering
We have a bylaw to help us manage litter. The Litter Act 1979 which was adopted by the Government also allows us to fine anyone caught dumping illegally. We want to ensure our community is kept healthy and safe and we also want to protect the environment. The litter bylaw allows us to fine people up to $400 if they:
- Leave litter in a public place.
- Leave household or trade refuse in a public litter bin.
- Interfere with litter awaiting collection by Taupō District Council.
The best way to avoid a fine is to do the right thing!
To report litter or an illegal rubbish dumping call us on 07 376 0899.
Litter on State Highways
If you see litter on a State Highway, call NZ Transport Agency on 0800 4 HIGHWAYS (0800 44 44 49).
Dumped rubbish on private property
Please be aware we do not remove dumped rubbish on private property. The owner of the property is responsible for the disposal of rubbish dumped on their property.
Community group litter pick up
Hosting a clean-up event is a great way to get involved in your community. We love to support community groups that want to arrange their own litter pick up. We're here to help - we can assist you with planning, provide bags and gloves for your clean-up and we will take all of the collected rubbish to the nearest landfill or transfer station.
You'll need our permission to do a litter pick up event on Council land and there are a few health and safety requirements that you will need to follow.
Event: Looking for love and litter
|Date||Saturday 11 February 2023|
|Time||10am – 12noon|
|Location||Taupō Lakefront Reserve (opposite Taupō Mini Golf)|
Looking for love? Looking to make new friends? Or happily loved-up and just looking to make a positive difference to your community?
Come to the ‘Looking for love and litter’ clean up event on the main lakefront opposite Taupō Mini Golf on Saturday 11 February.
It’s the event you’ve bin waiting for!
A fun event for the attached and unattached to help look after the place we love, meet others who also care about the environment and maybe find a new friend at the same time.
To make it easy to see who’s there for more than just the environment, attendees have the option of dressing in traffic light colours to indicate their status. So, if you’re single – wear green. If you’re already happily attached – wear red. If it’s complicated, or you just threw on the first thing that came to hand – wear whatever you want!
After the two-hour clean up, there will be an optional sausage sizzle on site to mix and mingle with other litter picker-uppers.
