Health (Hairdressing) Regulations 1980
Basic requirements of the premises are:
- All wettable areas must be continuously smooth, impervious to water and readily cleanable.
- Ventilation and lighting must be adequate.
- There must be hot and cold running water and separate sinks for hand washing, shampooing, utensil washing and any other needs.
- You must organise management of premises cleaning, building maintenance, pest control and chemical storage.
Premises are inspected on an annual basis (the fee for this inspection is included in the renewal fee) unless a complaint is received in which an inspection outside of the annual basis will be conducted.
How to apply
Submit an application online. An environmental health officer will contact you for an opening inspection.
Registration of health premises application
You may not open until registration has been made and the environmental health officer has approved opening of the premises.
The registration fee will be invoiced for payment.

Renew your licence
Registrations expire each year on 30 June.
We will send you a renewal application form before your expiry date. You must apply for renewal prior to 30 June to be able to continue operating.

Transfer an existing licence
If you are taking over an existing premises that has a current registration, you can apply to transfer it into your name.
We must receive applications within 14 days of you taking over the business. If the registration expires, you have to apply for a new registration.
