New online permit system for restricted fire season
28 September 2016
A new online fire permit system has been introduced to make it easier for those lighting fires during the restricted fire season to get a permit.
The restricted fire season in the Pumicelands fire area starts on Saturday and requires anyone lighting an open fire in a rural area of the Taupō District to apply for a fire permit.
Taupo District Council rural fire manager Roger Nelson said the new online system meant people could apply for permits from anywhere, which was particularly helpful for rural residents.
"We issued about 400 permits last year, which about was twice as many as the previous year," he said. "With such a high volume of permits to process it makes sense that it is a simple and hassle-free process online."
Mr Nelson said even though it may have seemed fairly wet over the last few weeks, the risk of out-of-hand fires was increasing. With summer approaching, the district is likely to have long fine spells that cause the landscape to dry out.
"These dry conditions can cause open fires to quickly escalate and get out of control," Mr Nelson said. "By telling us when you're having a fire, we can help to reduce any potential hazards."
Mr Nelson said outdoor pizza ovens and braziers also required a fire permit.
Permits must be applied for at least 48 hours prior to the fire. Apply for a permit online or pick up a hard copy application form from council offices on Lake Terrace, in Turangi and Mangakino or by contacting the council on 07 376 0899.
The restricted fire season is expected to continue through summer until at least April 30. This may be extended if conditions remain dry.
