UPDATE 1pm Saturday 22 August: Boil water notice lifted

The boil water notice for Mapara has now been lifted and the water supply is safe to drink.

Following water testing, no contamination has been detected in the water supply.

  • There is no longer any need to boil water for drinking, cooking or brushing teeth.
  • For households with water tanks, there is also no need to empty or treat your water tank following this incident.
  • We're reviewing the incident and considering improvements that could help prevent a similar issue in future.

1pm Friday 21 August

A routine inspection has led to the discovery of dead rodents in a reservoir that supplies water to the Mapara area.

We are therefore advising all residents in the Mapara area, as shown in red on the map below, to boil water for human consumption (for example, drinking, cooking and brushing teeth) until further notice.

  • Heating water to boiling point is sufficient - in a jug or pot.
  • No treatment is required for other usage such as washing clothes or taking a bath or shower.

We are carrying out further testing and should have results within 24 hours. We will update the community as we have more information.
