Contractors working on behalf of the Taupō District Council will carry out essential tree removal as part of ongoing safety and environmental management efforts.
Three mature silver birch trees on the Tapuaeharuru lakefront cliffs are located in an active erosion zone and now pose a risk due to their closeness to the eroding edge. After thorough assessment, these trees will be removed as a pre-emptive safety measure. Photos attached show the extent of the erosion damage and why this work is necessary.
There will be clear signage at the worksite to inform pedestrians and cyclists.
The felled lumber will be made available to the public to use for firewood. Please note that this will be at a different location, not at the work site, as we don’t want lots of trailers turning up on the lakefront. Pick up is at Crown Park near the Crown Road-Miro Street intersection from 4pm this Thursday.
This work is being carried out with careful planning and in the interest of protecting both people and the environment. The trees will be replaced with suitable native species that are better suited to preventing erosion.
