Paws and Pages comes to Taupō Library

Taupō Library is introducing a new bi-monthly programme from Tuesday 2 September, that allows young readers to read stories to dogs.

Paws and Pages offers a calm environment where children can build their reading confidence.

Run by the Canine Friends Pet Therapy organisation, Paws and Pages has already proven successful in other districts. President Vicky Graham is looking forward to seeing its positive impact reach Taupō.

“This year we’re celebrating our 35th anniversary. We have 500 active members, and we’re proud to say we have 36 Reading to Dogs programmes around the country – and Taupō will be our 37th,” Vicky says.

“Dogs are completely non-judgemental. They’re a calm reading companion; they’re not going to tell a child off for pronouncing a word incorrectly. The sessions are not only for children with reading difficulties but also for children who don’t have a lot of self-confidence.”

International research shows many people experience an improvement in their mental and physical health from interacting with animals. Taupō Library’s senior customer services officer Lindsey Seaton is excited to see a programme that will help children develop their reading skills in a safe space.

“The kids can choose a book from the shelf or bring one from home,” Lindsey says. “It’s not just about reading; it’s about having confidence in what you’re saying and knowing that every voice has value.”

Paws and Pages sessions will be held at Taupō Library after school, every second Tuesday from 2 September. The dogs will be in the library for an hour, with 15 minute slots available for children to book a reading session with their new best friend.
