Important decision to make about Māori Wards in this year's election

This election requires you to make an extra decision. Not only will you be asked to vote for the Mayor and councillors for the Taupō District Council but you will also be asked whether to keep or remove the Taupō District Māori ward, Te Papamārearea.

The Māori ward, with two seats, was introduced in 2022 to improve Māori representation on Taupō District Council. The government has told us we need to ask everyone in a binding poll this year whether they’d like to keep the Māori ward or remove it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re on the Māori roll or the General roll – everyone gets to vote in this poll.

Voting is open from Tuesday 9 September until Saturday 11 October at 12 noon.
